Sydney / Snowy Mountains
Located in the Kosciusko National Park in the heritage listed Australian Alps, the Snowy Mountain is one of Australia’s most popular ski regions. The region is home to two international standard ski resorts. Perisher, Australia’s largest resort, and Thredbo, which boats Australia’s longest runs and biggest vertical drop.
Combined the two resorts offer more than 4000 acres of terrain, with over 50 lifts, more than 150 groomed runs and 9 terrain parks. Both resorts offer ideal conditions for beginners with dedicated learning areas and private or group lessons.
Enjoy the crisp alpine air, build a snowman or enjoy a variety of other fun winter activities such as night skiing or snow shoe tours. Both resorts offer a vibrant events calendar filled with family nights, fireworks displays, live music and ski and snowboard demonstrations. You will also be spoilt for choice with plenty of bars and restaurants available.
Choose from a wide range of on-snow accommodation options or set up a base at one of the nearby local regional centres such as the bustling town of Jindabyne. The surrounding area is also well known for award winning cold-climate wines, be sure to visit one of the cosy wine bars or cellar doors.
The Snowy Mountains are also home to Mt Kosciusko – Australia’s highest peak, and the site of the Snowy Hydro-electric Scheme, an engineering marvel that was named one of the civil engineering wonders of the modern world.
Located half way between Sydney and Melbourne or just 2.5 hours from Canberra, Australia’s capital city, there are a range of ways to get to the Snowy Mountains. If you choose to self drive, please note that there are specific wheel chain requirements enforced in most resorts. Please refer to the GAO Snow safety information section for more information.
